Jeremiah Tyler Named To Buchanan Award Watchlist And Preseason Third-Team All-American
August 02, 2021 | Football
Jeremiah Tyler has been a dominant force for the Princeton football team since he first joined the linebacking corps. The Stats Perform preseason All-American team suggests that his dominance will continue as he prepares for his final season with the Tigers.
Â
Tyler has been named to the Buchanan Award watchlist and a Stats Perform third-team preseason All-American. The Buchanan Award is given to the top defensive player in the FCS, and Tyler is one of only 35 players to be named to the list.
The senior from Detroit will be back looking to build off a junior year in 2019 that saw him earn unanimous first-team All-Ivy League honors and be one of two finalists for the Bushnell Cup as the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year.
Â
"We're all thrilled that JT is getting recognized before the start of the season," says Princeton head coach Bob Surace. "Of course he'd be the first one to tell you that none of that matters once the games actually start. He's worked so hard his entire career, and he's inspired all of his teammates to do so as well. He also brings so much positivity and energy to our program every day. I know he can't wait to get started."
Â
Tyler has been a part of two Ivy League championship teams in his first three seasons, having helped the Tigers to league titles as a freshman in 2016 and again as a sophomore in 2018, when Princeton went 10-0. Tyler returned a blocked punt for a touchdown in the 28-0 win over Penn his freshman year, and he was a second-team All-Ivy selection on the perfect 2018 team.
Â
His junior year was his best individual season, when he upped his game to another level. He finished with 62 tackles, 24 of which were unassisted and 14.5 were for loss. He also had 3.5 sacks and a fumble recovery.
Â
His best game was against Harvard, when he made six tackles, two for loss, and added a key interception in the 30-24 win. He was named the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week after that game.
Princeton opens its season at Lehigh on Sept. 18 and then is home against Stetson the following Saturday. The Ivy League opener is Oct. 2, at home against Columbia.
The other Ivy League players on the list are Brown quarterback E.J. Perry and Columbia return man Mike Roussos, who were also third-team selections.
