Princeton Voted Preseason Ivy League Football Favorite
August 09, 2021 | Football
Princeton has won three of the last seven Ivy League football championships and is now favored to make it four of eight.
Â
The Tigers were named the preseason league favorite in a vote of Ivy media members, receiving eight of 16 first-place votes and 113 total points. Yale, with six first-place votes and 104 points, was second, followed by Dartmouth with 88 points and one first-place vote.
Â
"It's always nice to see our program held in high regard," says Princeton head coach Bob Surace. "At the same time, nobody will remember the preseason poll when November rolls around. All eight teams start out even, and that will be even more true than ever this season. It's great to be the preseason pick, but every league team will start practice thinking they will be No. 1 when the season ends. We have to work hard every day to reach out goals. I know every one of our guys is excited to get started."
Â
After a year off due to the COVID pandemic, the league will feature a ton of new faces across the board. To give a sense of just how uncertain things are heading into the season, Columbia was picked to finish seventh – but received the other first-place vote.
Â
Princeton returns eight players who combined for nine All-Ivy League honors – Jacob Birmelin was All-Ivy as a wide receiver and kick returner) after a 2019 season that saw the Tigers go 8-2 and run their two-year record to 18-2 after having a perfect year in 2018. The 18 wins are the most Princeton has had over a two-year stretch since the 1950-51 seasons.
Â
There will be seven returning starters on each side of the ball, and the team also has great depth and two full classes of newcomers looking to break into the lineup. Among the top returnees are 2019 first-team All-Ivy League selections Jeremiah Tyler (linebacker) and Delan Stallworth (defensive back), as well as honorable mention linebacker James Johnson. On the offensive side of the ball, Princeton returns second-team All-Ivy honorees Birmelin (as a receiver), Collin Eaddy (running back), Henry Byrd (offensive tackle) and tight end (Carson Bobo). Princeton also returns second-team All-Ivy punter Will Powers.
Â
The 2021 season kicks off Sept. 18 at Lehigh, followed by the home opener Sept. 25 against Stetson. The Ivy League season begins at home against Columbia on Oct. 2, and the Tigers also host Harvard (Oct. 23) and Yale (Nov. 13).
