Men's Soccer Triples Up Fairfield, 3-0
September 15, 2021 | Men's Soccer
Princeton dialed up its second consecutive win, flashing by Fairfield, 3-0, at Sherrerd Field.
The first-ever meeting between the two teams saw Princeton (2-2-0) score early -- lifting the lid in the 7th minute -- and late with two goals in the final 20 minutes to pull away and put together a second shutout win in a row.
Francis Akomeah-Sirleaf opened the scoring 6:55 in, finding a loose ball off a Princeton set piece and slipping his second goal in as many games home.
In the 71st minute, Walker Gillespie opened his account for 2021, taking advantage of a Fairfield miscue on a back pass and walking around the keeper for a tap-in to extend the lead to a pair.
Moments after the Gillespie goal, play was halted for about five minutes when a light tower went out. Once Princeton's facilities crew jumped into action and got the lights on in the stadium, Princeton turned the lights out on Fairfield for good with a Daniel Diaz-Bonilla goal in the 83rd minute. Kevin O'Toole did work in the midfield, causing a turnover and sending Diaz-Bonilla on his way, but it was crafty footwork from Diaz-Bonilla which found space between two defenders and gave hom room to uncork a shot by Fairfield's keeper.
Jack Roberts only needed one save for the clean sheet -- the second game in a row he picked up a one-save shutout. Don't sleep on the one save though, it was a dazzler. A long entry pass from the Stags found the feet of Jonathan Filipe who was on his own by Princeton's defense. Roberts stayed true to his line and turned away the shot in the 21st minute to keep Princeton ahead by one. If that ball finds twine, the entire game changes.

Only one save needed by Jack Roberts tonight, but it was a beauty! pic.twitter.com/Tk1J8DfVY9
