Shea Rowing Center Participates In Arshay Cooper's 'Day On" Service Project

TAMPA – The Shea Rowing Center spent Martin Luther King, Jr., Day giving back to the city of Tampa by helping refurbish a park and baseball fields.
This was done in conjunction with Arshay Cooper's Day On service project with the Tampa Parks and Recreation department. Cooper's challenge to rowing teams was to find a partner with strong community roots - a local YMCA, public school, AmeriCorps, Boys and Girls Club, church, non-profit, food bank, shelter, etc. - and create a partnership that allows teams to see how they work and add some always-needed horsepower to their efforts. The men's and women's teams from Cal, Washington, Boston University, Wisconsin, Brown, and Princeton all pledged their commitment to DAY ON to show communities that "rowing cares."
Cooper grew up on the West Side of Chicago and joined (and later became the captain of) the country's first all-black high school rowing team. He later wrote a memoir on his high school rowing career titled "A Most Beautiful Thing," which was latera adapted into a film. Cooper also runs A Most Beautiful Thing Inclusion Fund which brings rowing, academic support, and college access to under-resourced communities.
"The entire Princeton boathouse is all so incredibly grateful to Arshay and the A Most Beautiful Thing Fund for creating Day On and including us in the effort," said Princeton heavyweight head coach Greg Hughes. "Princeton Rowing first came down to Tampa in the late 70's for their winter training trip and we've come every year since. In that time our boathouse has won countless Sprints, Ivy and National championships. Tampa has been instrumental in our success over the last 40 years, and we owe so much to this town. This year, we were able to get involved with the community here in new ways and make a difference in the athletic experience of the kids here in this community. It meant a lot to all of us, and we can't wait to build our relationship in the years to come."
