Newell '16 Earns Olympic Bid with Team China
January 28, 2022 | Women's Ice Hockey
Kim Newell '16, the program's career leader in saves and wins, was named as one of three netminders for China's entry in the 2022 Olympic Games women's hockey competition.
Newell put together a Princeton career with 52 wins and 3,096 saves and went on to play professionally with the KRS Vanke Rays in China.
During AAPI Heritage Month last May, Newell talked with GoPrincetonTigers.com about her Chinese heritage, and now she'll get a chance to play for China as it hosts the Games.
China is in Group B and will be looking to finish in the top three of the five teams in that group to advance to the quarterfinals.
China's pool-play schedule for the Games is as follows (all dates/times ET)
Wednesday, Feb. 2 vs. Czech Republic, 11:10 p.m.
Thursday, Feb. 3 vs. Denmark, 11:10 p.m.
Sunday, Feb. 6 vs. Japan, 3:40 a.m.
Monday, Feb. 7 vs. Sweden, 8:10 a.m.
Newell makes it three 2022 Olympians for the Princeton women's hockey program, which has Claire Thompson '20 and Sarah Fillier, a sophomore in 2019-20, on Team Canada.
