Liu Continues Outstanding Fall Season, Wins Match Play at Baltusrol
October 11, 2022 | Women's Golf
Princeton sophomore Victoria Liu, the reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year and Ivy League Championship tournament medalist, won her match-play round Tuesday against the top player from the ACC at the Ivy Intercollegiate, North Carolina's Krista Junkkari, 3-up as the event at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J. came to a close.
The tournament featured two rounds of stroke play Monday on the Lower Course with finishes there determining the order of ACC and Ivy League players for Tuesday's 30 match-play rounds on the Upper Course. Junkkari won medalist honors with Liu as the top Ivy Leaguer, one stroke behind Junkkari.
Liu trailed only early in the match, with Junkkari winning the first hole and the third to gain and then regain a one-hole lead that lasted through the fourth hole of the match. Liu then won four straight holes, five through eight, to turn a one-hole deficit into a three-hole lead, and Liu stayed in front the rest of the way. A win on 14 restored a three-hole lead, and the players split the next two holes as Liu clinched on 16.
Tiffany Kong, Catherine Rao, Yu Kyung Kim and Grace Ni all came up just short against their ACC opponents. UNC's Kayla Smith was a 4-up winner over Kong, while Florida State's Charlotte Heath won 4-up over Catherine Rao, Miami's Nataliya Guseva was a 4-up winner over Kim, and Miami's Sara Byrne won 3-up over Ni.
