Coles Represents Canada at U23 World Wrestling Championships
October 13, 2022 | Wrestling
Princeton sophomore Danny Coles represented Canada in the 65kg competition at the U23 World Wrestling Championships that wrapped up Oct. 22 in Pontevedra, Spain.
Coles won a repechage round after his first-round opponent, Armenia's Vazgen Tevanyan, made the final, bringing Coles back in for a chance to win his way back to wrestling for bronze. The repechage opener saw Coles defeat Great Britain's Ross Connelly 12-1, but Japan's Ryoma Anraku was an 11-1 winner over Coles in the next round of the repechage, ending Coles' run.

"Getting the opportunity to represent Canada on the world stage is an experience that I will always be incredibly grateful for," Coles said heading into the event. "However, this experience is particularly special as this is the first time I will be representing Princeton Wrestling as well as Canada at the highest level."
As a freshman last winter, Coles was an EIWA placewinner at 141 pounds, finishing seventh. Holding the eighth seed, Coles bounced back from an opening loss in the round of 16 to win twice in the consolation draw, including against sixth-seeded Thomas Deck of Army before seeing his run end in the consolation round of four.
With wins against Harvard, Brown and Cornell during the Ivy League slate, Coles was an honorable mention All-Ivy League last season, finishing with a record of 9-8 on the season overall. Four of those wins came in Princeton's dual matches, adding a win against Arizona State to the three in the Ivy League.
