Women’s Volleyball Falls to Brown in Ivy Tournament Semifinals

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 2 seed Princeton University women's volleyball team fell to No. 3 seed Brown in the Ivy League Tournament semifinals, 3-0 (25-18, 28-26, 30-28), Friday evening inside Payne Whitney Gymnasium.
Despite the setback, the Tigers end the 2022 season as Ivy League Champions, with 21 wins and a sweep of the major Ivy League postseason playing awards.
Senior Melina Mahood led the match in kills with 16, senior Lindsey Kelly in assists with 40 and senior Cameron Dames in digs with 25. Senior Elena Montgomery, sophomore Mariah Haislip and freshman Lucia Scalamandre each the team-high in blocks with two, while Kelly and senior Avery tied the match-high in service aces with two.
Dames, a two-time Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year, ends her career with 1,570 digs, which ranks fourth all-time in school history. Her 445 digs in the 2022 season also rank No. 10 all-time at Princeton for most digs in a season. Scalamandre, the 2022 Ivy League Rookie of the Year, ends the season with 104 blocks which ranks No. 3 all-time in program history for most blocks in a season.
The Bears opened the match with a 7-0 run, but a Scalamandre kill sparked a 3-0 Princeton run narrowed the deficit to four, 7-4. Brown extended its lead out to seven at 22-15, but a Mahood kill led off a 3-0 run that made it a four-point set, 22-18. Despite the Tigers' best efforts to mount a comeback, Brown held on for the 25-18 opening set victory.
The second set began as a back-and-forth battle; with the score tied at 6-6, a Mahood kill ignited a 3-0 run that gave Princeton a 9-6 advantage. With the Tigers up 13-10, a kill by Haislip led off a 3-0 run and Princeton took a 16-point lead at 16-10. A service ace by freshman Ella Bunde gave Princeton a 21-16 lead, but Brown continued to chip away and made it a one-point set, 23-22. Brown would tie the score at 25-25, then close it out with a 3-0 run, prevailing in the set 28-26 and taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
Brown used a 5-0 run early in the third set to jump ahead, 5-2, but a pair of 3-0 runs by the Tigers saw Princeton take an 11-8 lead. A double block by Luoma and Haislip gave the Tigers a 16-13 advantage, but the Bears fought back and tied the score at 18-18. A block by Scalamandre put Princeton up two, 21-19, but brown continued to battle and tied it up at 23-23. The Tigers and Bears battled back-and-forth for the remainder of the set, but Brown would triumph 30-28 and win the match, 3-0.
