
Women's Volleyball Completes Saturday Sweep Of Iona & Coppin State

BALTIMORE – The Princeton University women's volleyball team completed a Saturday sweep at the Physical Education Complex to wrap up the Towson/Coppin State Invitational, first earning a 3-0 (35-15, 25-18, 25-13) victory over Iona then a 3-0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-21) triumph over the Eagles.
Valerie Nutakor ended the day with team-highs in points (22.5) and kills (22). She recorded a .327 attacking percentage along with 23 digs. Lucia Scalamandre totaled 22 points, 17 kills on a .516 attacking percentage and seven blocks. Taylor Clark added 19 points, 17 kills on a .394 attacking percentage and four blocks while Ashtyn Sims tallied 14 kills. Sydney Draper handed out a team-high 80 service aces and had 11 digs, four service aces and two blocks and in addition, Sydney Bold compiled a team-high 28 digs. Olivia Foye also ended the day with 20 digs and four service aces.
Princeton vs Iona
The Gaels jumped out to a 14-11 lead in the first set, but a kill by Nutakor ignited an 11-0 run that swung the set decisively in Princeton's favor as the Tigers, 22-14. Princeton closed the set out on a 3-0 run that included an Iona attacking error along with kills by Burris and Draper.
While the second set started off as a back-and-forth battle, with the score knotted at 11-11 a Nutakor kill led a 4-0 that gave Princeton a 15-11 edge. A kill by Clark ignited another 4-0 run that the Tigers ahead by seven, 19-12, and the Tigers would go on to earn a 25-18 second set victory.
Princeton got off to a hot start in the third set, jumping out to an 11-4 advantage that included a 4-0 run led by a Shelby Burriss kill. A kill by Clarke led a second 4-0 run that put the Tigers up 15-7, and Princeton never looked back from there. An Iona attacking error followed by kills from Sims and Burris closed the match out as Princeton took the third set, 25-13, and the match 3-0.
Princeton vs Coppin State
Sparked by a Nutakor kill, an early 6-0 run saw the Tigers take a 6-1 lead over the Eagles in the first set. Shortly after, a 5-0 run, led by a Sims kill, gave the Tigers a nine-point advantage at 15-4. A Scalamandre kill gave Princeton set point at 24-10, before a Burriss kill sealed the set victor for the Tigers, 25-11.
Coppin State showed its resilience in the second set, keeping it close and getting within one point at 19-18. A kill by Sims followed by an Eagle attacking error then a Draper service ace created further separation at 22-18, then the Tigers would end the set with a double block by Burriss and Clarke, a Nutakor kill then a McNair kill as Princeton would go up 2-0 in the match with a 25-10 second set win.
The Eagles took an early 8-6 lead in the third set, but a Sims kill ignited a 4-0 run that put the Tigers back on top, 10-8. With the Tigers ahead 12-10, a Scalamandre kill sparked a 5-0 run that gave the Tigers a 17-10 advantage, and from there the Tigers would hold on for the 25-21 third set triumph, sweeping the match 3-0.
