Three Titles Highlight Wrestlers' Day at Princeton Open
November 06, 2022 | Wrestling
Glory's route to the event title saw him start with three bonus-point wins, including two technical falls and a major decision, before a semifinal against Dean Peterson of Rutgers, wrestling unattached. Glory never trailed against Peterson, building a 5-2 lead with a takedown with 44 seconds to go in the second period. Peterson then had an escape and a takedown, both in the final 30 seconds of the bout, but the riding-time point was enough to give Glory a 6-5 win.
In a matchup of Intermat-ranked wrestlers, No. 2-ranked Glory met another Rutgers wrestler competing unattached in No. 22 Dylan Shawver. Glory battled through another close one, as with Peterson, with Shawver taking what became his lone lead of the match on an early second-period reversal to go in front 6-5. Glory retook the lead by the time the period was over, tying it on an escape and going up 8-6 on a takedown before pushing the lead to 10-6 on a reversal early in the third. Shawver pulled back to within 10-9 on an escape and a takedown around the minute mark of the third, but he got no closer as Glory answered the takedown with an escape for what became the final point of the match.
Mulhauser won the event title in his collegiate debut, opening with a technical fall in the quarterfinals and following that with a 10-3 decision against Lock Haven's Tyler Stoltzfus in the semis to set up a final against Lehigh's Thayne Lawrence before Mulhauser was awarded the win on a medical forfeit.
Cover's title came in an all-Tiger final against Travis Stefanik with the teammates defending their top-two seeds in the tournament. Cover won his quarterfinal 13-6 over Lehigh's Karam Chakif and his semifinal 11-2 over Army Prep's Evan Anderson, while Stefanik had a pair of close decisions on his way to the final. Against Rider's David Szuba in the quarters, Stefanik had a takedown in the closing seconds to secure a 7-6 win, and in the semis against Rutgers' PJ Casale, Stefanik had a reversal and a takedown in the second period after a scoreless first period both ways, leading 4-1 headed for the third. The only point in the final round was a Casale escape in a 4-2 final.
In the final, the two Tiger wrestlers went through a sudden-victory period and two 30-second tiebreakers before Cover was declared the winner on riding time following a 2-2 match. Each wrestler had an escape point during the tiebreaker periods, and each had one during the regulation portion of the bout to account for all the scoring.
Along with the three champions, Princeton had two more runner-up finishers alongside Stefanik in Luke Stout and Nate Dugan, a third-place finisher in Aidan Conner, and a sixth-place finisher in rookie Rocco Camillaci. At 184, Dugan won four times to reach the final, outlasting George Mason's Tyler Kocak 11-8 in the semis before John Poznanski, No. 8 in the Intermat rankings, won the final 7-0. At 197, No. 17 Stout led after a period in a matchup of Intermat-ranked wrestlers against No. 13 Ethan Laird of Rider, but Laird had a second-period escape and a takedown to lead 4-2 after a period and allowed Stout only an escape point in the third. Camillaci lost his round-of-32 match 5-3 to Michael Cetta of Rutgers, wrestling unattached, before winning four consolation matches, three by bonus points, before an 8-7 fifth-place loss to Lock Haven's Nicholas Stonecheck.
Princeton's results are below, and all results can be found here. Rankings are Intermat rankings.
The Tigers will return to competition Nov. 18 with the dual-match opener at Indiana. Princeton was No. 23 in the NWCA preseason ranking released Oct. 28.
