Sarah Mansfield Named Assistant Field Hockey Coach
February 11, 2022 | Field Hockey
Sarah Mansfield and the Princeton field hockey team finished the 2021 season on opposite benches on Bedford Field. They'll start the 2022 season on the same side, looking to make the kind of deep November run that they've made before.
Princeton head coach Carla Tagliente has for the second time hired Mansfield, who previously had been an assistant under Tagliente at UMass, as Mansfield has joined the Princeton staff, filling the vacancy created when Caitlin Van Sickle returned to her alma mater, North Carolina. Mansfield spent seven years at Massachusetts before spending the 2021 season at Columbia, finishing the season with a loss to the Tigers.
Among her many accomplishments in the sport, Mansfield was an NCAA champion goalie as a player at UConn as a senior in 2013. A four-year starter, she was 4-1 as a player against the Tigers, with a win in the 2011 NCAA opening round and a loss in the 2012 regular-season, when Princeton went on to win the NCAA title.
"We are thrilled for Sarah to join the Princeton Field Hockey family," Tagliente says. "As a former All-American and national champion, Sarah knows first-hand the commitment required to be the best and to build a championship culture. She has navigated the coaching ranks for the past eight years gaining experience at both the collegiate and junior national team level. Sarah is well known around the country for her character and hockey IQ. I am excited for our staff and for the program to welcome her to Princeton."
Mansfield joins a team that was a shootout away from winning the Ivy League championship a year ago. The 2021 Princeton team had no seniors.
"I'm so excited to be working with Carla Tagliente, [associate head coach] Dina Rizzo, the Princeton administration and staff and the young women who make up this team," Mansfield says. "I've coached with and against Carla for eight years, and I know her to be an incredibly intelligent, thoughtful and caring coach and leader. I can't wait to get started and to work alongside so many great people here at Princeton University."
Mansfield is a native of Cornwall, England, and she played internationally on the English U-16, U-18 and U-21 teams. She was a four-year All-American as the UConn goalie, starting 88 of the 91 games in which she appeared. She allowed only 29 goals in 1,816 minutes her senior year, and she shut out Duke 2-0 in the NCAA final.
She began her coaching career with youth teams in England before coaching in college in the United States. She also has considerable experience as a coach with USA Field Hockey at Development Squad Training Camps, U17 and U21 national programs and at high performance training centers.
Mansfield will work with the Princeton goalies and defense.
Princeton has won 27 Ivy League field hockey championships, more than every other league school combined.
