February 03, 2022 | Women's Ice Hockey
Sarah Fillier '24 needed just 64 seconds into her Olympic debut to score a goal, and before the game was eight minutes old, she had what became the game-winning goal, getting three points before the first period was out in a 12-1 win over Switzerland in Canada's first if four pool-play games.
Canada will meet Finland in the second pool-play game on Friday at 11:10 p.m. ET.
While Fillier had all three of her points in the first 12 minutes of the game, Claire Thompson '20 rolled up the points beginning in the second period, assisting on three of Canada's first four goals in the period as the team took an 8-0 lead into the last ice cut.
Thompson then added her first Olympic goal with 3:40 to go to make it 11-1 for the Canadians, and Thompson had an assist on the team's final goal to make it a five-point night and match teammate Natalie Spooner for the most points on the night. Fillier was one of three players with two goals on the night, along with Spooner and Blayre Turnbull.
Kim Newell '16, who is Zhao Jiaying as part of China's roster for the Games, suited up as China's backup goalie for the host team's opener, a 3-1 loss to the Czech Republic. China will play again on Thursday at 11:10 p.m. ET against Denmark.
