March 12, 2022 | Women's Basketball
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- We're goin' dancing!
Princeton's No. 24-ranked women's basketball team pulled away from a Columbia challenge en route to a 77-59 win in the 2022 Ivy League Tournament championship game to secure the Ivy League's automatic bid to the 2022 NCAA Tournament.
The victory secured Princeton's ninth NCAA Tournament appearance, Princeton will enter the national tournament on a 17-game winning streak overall. Princeton has won the last three Ivy League Tournaments contested, with tourney crowns in 2018, 2019 and 2022.
Kaitlyn Chen rose to the moment with a career-high 30 points and tournament Most Outstanding Player honors. Chen was 9-for-13 shooting from the floor -- and a whopping 11-for-14 from the free throw line in her first-ever Ivy Tournament title game.
Four different Tigers scored in double figured, with Julia Cunningham (16), Abby Meyers (16) and Grace Stone (12) helping Princeton put together a balanced offensive effort. Ellie Mitchell had 10 rebounds and four steals in a disruptive defensive showing.
After the first quarter ended in a 16-16 tie, Princeton appeared to pull comfortably away in the second period. The Tigers outscored the Lions, 21-9, in the second frame for a 12-point halftime lead.
The Lions were resilient to start the second half, climbing back to within seven at 39-32 before Princeton effectively shut the door with a 10-0 run to push its lead to 17 points. A brief Columbia spurt in the fourth quarter saw the lead shrink to eight with 7:11 remaining, but Chen scored on a layup of her own and then dished to Cunningham for a bucker of her own and the Tigers were once again holding a double-digit lead and the Lions had no further answer.
As the second half got underway, Columbia got with single-digits, 39-32, before a 10-0 push by Princeton extended its lead to 17 with 4:37 left in the third quarter. The Lions made one more push, closing the gap to eight, 59-51, with 7:11 remaining in the game. The Tigers scored on the next two possessions and the Lions never got closer than nine the rest of the way.
The Tigers await their NCAA Tournament seed and opponent via the NCAA Selection Show is tomorrow at 8 p.m. on ESPN/ESPN2.
