Men’s Basketball Falls to Yale in #IvyMadness Final

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In another contest that came down to the final moments, the Princeton University men's basketball team fell just short against Yale University, 66-64, Sunday afternoon inside Lavietes Pavilion in the final of the Ivy League Tournament.
Junior Tosan Evbuomwan led the way for Princeton, finishing with a game-high 20 points on 8-for-13 shooting, along with a game-high 11 rebounds, and five assists. His five assists brought his total to 135 assists in 2021-22, moving him to No. 3 all-time on Princeton's single season assist list, and one spot ahead of Franklin C. Cappon-Edward C. Green '40 Head Coach Mitch Henderson, who had 131 assists in the 1997-78 season. Senior Jaelin Llewellyn added 18 points and four rebounds, while senior Ethan Wright finished with 15 points, and four rebounds.
The Tigers also brought their point total to 2316, which stands as the most points ever scored in a season by a Princeton team. The previous season-best was 2311 points, set in 1974-75.
Llewellyn dropped in a layup high off the glass for the first basket of the game, with 19:05 on the clock. The Tigers and Bulldogs then proceeded to trade baskets, until back-to-back Yale baskets saw the Bulldogs take an 11-6 lead, with 15:00 left in the half.
A three-pointer by sophomore Matt Allocco at 13:17 made it a 14-10 contest, but an 8-0 Yale run saw the Bulldogs jump ahead 24-14, with 7:36 left in the half. An Evbuomwan three-point play with 6:40 on the clock followed by a Friberg three-pointer with 5:33 left in the half made it a four-point game, 24-20. The Tigers continued to keep it close, as a Llewellyn three-pointer at 1:21 made it a 28-25 game, but the Bulldogs would hold a 32-25 advantage going into halftime.
In the second half, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 38-27 lead with 16:07 remaining, but a Friberg three-pointer from the left corner sparked a 7-0 run, and made it a 38-34 contest with 14:44 on the clock.
Princeton continued to chip away at the lead, and a three-pointer by Wright from the right corner at 11:28 trimmed it to two points, 45-43. Yale were determined not to let the Tigers back into the game, and back-to-back Bulldog three-pointers would make it 51-43 with 8:52 left to play.
A Llewellyn three-pointer followed a layup by junior Ryan Langborg narrowed it 58-53, with 4:01 on the clock, but Yale would extend its lead out to 64-55, with 0:59 remaining.
The Tigers mounted a furious rally in the final minute; Wright knocked down a three-pointer with 0:42 on the clock, and Llewelyn followed with another at 0:33, and one more at 0:24, making it a 66-64 game.
