March 09, 2022 | Baseball
Princeton, N.J. — Princeton prepares to face off against its fiercest opponent so far this season with a trip to Starkville, Miss. for a three-game series against No. 23 Mississippi State. The Tigers' open their series against the Bulldogs on Friday at 6 p.m., with game two on Saturday at 2 p.m. and the series finale slated for Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Tigers are in search of their first win and enter the weekend at 0-8. Four of those games were one-run contests and three were decided by a walk-off in the bottom of the ninth. Princeton has made a habit of clawing its way back into games and has scored at least one run in the ninth inning five times. The Tigers have outscored opponents 14-5 in the final frame this season. Twenty-three of Princeton's 33 runs have come after the fifth inning.
Nadir Lewis will look to continue his hot hitting streak. Through eight games, he leads the team in every batting category with a .500/1.000/.583 slash line, 14 hits, three doubles, a triple, three home runs, 10 RBI, and eight runs scored.
Brendan Cumming and Jordan Kelly's bats also came alive last weekend. They both enter the series against Mississippi State with .333 batting averages.
On the hump, Princeton is likely to stick with their regular rotation of Jackson Emus, Tom Chmielewski, and Andrew D'Alessio. Emus is coming off a massive performance against VCU which earned him Ivy League Pitcher of the Week honors. Against the Rams, he tossed 7.0 innings with 13 strikeouts—the most by a Princeton pitcher since 2012. Emus enters the weekend with a 1.38 ERA after two starts and has held opposing batters to a .133 average with 19 strikeouts in 13.0 innings pitched.
Mississippi State comes into the weekend with a mixed bag of results, with a 7-6 record accompanying a top-25 ranking. After dropping two of three to Tulane last weekend, the Bulldogs bounced back with an 11-5 win over No. 11 Texas Tech on Tuesday. All three of this weekend's games will be available to stream on SEC Network+.
