Brown Deals Baseball Two Narrow Defeats
April 30, 2022 | Baseball
Princeton, N.J. — Princeton was dealt a pair of narrow defeats in its doubleheader against Brown this afternoon.
The Bears took game one after three runs in the eighth turned a 5-4 deficit into a 7-5 Brown lead. A Kaden Kram solo homer knotted the game at 4-4 in game two, but a walk-off home run gave the hosts the 5-4 victory and doubleheader sweep.
Despite the losses, Princeton's starting pitching impressed today. In game one, Jackson Emus pitched 7.0 innings with one earned run allowed and seven strikeouts. Tom Chmielewski went 6.0 innings in game two with eight K's—a career-high—and one walk.
Nick DiPietrantonio and Matt Scannell led the Tigers' offense in games one and two, respectively. They each hit a three-run home run in the top of the first inning to open the scoring in each game. Scannell's three RBI on that swing, as well as his RBI sac fly in game one, extended his team-leading tally to 37 on the season.
Game 1
Princeton got out to a fast start, as DiPietrantonio fired a three-run shot to left-center for a 3-0 Tiger lead in the first. Brown pulled one back in the bottom of the first, then edged in front with three runs in the second to make it a 4-3 ballgame.
A sac fly from Scannell immediately tied the game once again in the third, then an RBI single by Brendan Cumming restored Princeton's advantage at 5-4 through four frames.
Emus worked three consecutive scoreless frames and retired the side in order twice as Princeton held on to its one-run lead heading into the eighth inning.
But some well-executed small ball by the Bears flipped the game on its head in the dying moments. Two RBI bunt singles gave Brown a 6-5 lead, then an RBI single up the gut gave the hosts a two-run cushion. Princeton was unable to plate a couple runs in the ninth as the Bears stole the game-one victory.
Game 2
Once again, Princeton fired itself in front with a three-run home run in the first inning—this time, courtesy of Scannell's bat.
On the hump, Chmielewski rolled through the Bears lineup in one of his best outings of the season. The southpaw allowed just three hits through his first four innings, racking up six strikeouts along the way.
Unfortunately, Brown eventually broke through in the fifth. An RBI single, throwing error, and two-run home run gave the hosts a 4-3 lead.
Kram tied the game in the next inning with a no-doubt solo shot to left field, but the Bears once again had the final say as a walk-off home run gave Brown a 5-4 victory.
The two teams will meet one final time this weekend in Sunday's series finale, set to start at noon.
