Tigers Win at Monmouth
April 05, 2022 | Softball
Sophia Marsalo and Lauren Sablone had two hits apiece, Molly Chambers threw 6 1/3 innings and struck out nine to get the win, and the Princeton softball team defeated Monmouth 7-5 on Tuesday.
Monmouth opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Lindsey Baron opened the inning with a double and came home two batters later when Stavi Augur reached on an error, but that was the only run the Hawks got over the first six innings and only run of the day against Chambers.
Meanwhile, Princeton built a 7-1 lead, starting in the second inning with a two-run home run from Sablone that picked up Grace Jackson, who reached on a third-strike wild pitch.Â
The Tigers added to that in the top of the third with an Allison Ha double that scored Serena Starks' base hit, and Marsalo followed Ha with another double to make it 4-1. Princeton pushed it to 6-1 in the sixth when an Ali Blanchard base hit and a Sablone double put two on for Cate Bade, whose bunt was tough to handle and scored both Princeton runners.
Jackson had Princeton's final RBI, as Lauren Murphy reached on an error in the seventh and Jackson's base hit three batters later brought her home.
Monmouth mounted a rally in the seventh after Chambers left, using three walks, three hits and a hit batter to pull within 7-5. Chambers returned to the game with two out in the inning, faced one batter, got her ninth strikeout of the day and ended it to finish with an unearned run allowed on five hits without a walk.
Princeton will return home to resume the Ivy League season on Saturday with a 12:30 p.m. doubleheader against Cornell.
