Softball Sweeps Penn, Stays Unbeaten in Ivy League
April 11, 2026 | Softball
A series-opening shutout and a doubleheader nightcap walk-off helped the Princeton softball team stay undefeated in the Ivy League on Saturday afternoon at Cynthia Lynn Paul '94 Field as the Tigers swept the first two of a three-game series with Penn, 6-0 and 6-5.
Now 11-0 in the Ivy, Princeton will enter Sunday with a four-game lead over Harvard in the Ivy League and a five-game lead over both Penn and Columbia, each at 6-5.Â
Saturday's first game saw Brielle Wright and Cassidy Shaw combine for a four-hit shutout, with Wright throwing the first four innings and allowing two hits and two walks with four strikeouts and Shaw earning the save by going three innings with two hits and a walk allowed, and five Ks.Â
Princeton scratched out three runs across the first two innings, with Julieta Roa driving one home with a single in the first before a Sonia Zhang ground ball and a Graciela Dominguez double each brought home a run to grow the lead to 3-0. The last three runs came in the fifth, with RBI singles from Maddie Ratcheson and Mia Valenzuela and a Zhang grounder each driving home a run to pad the lead.
The second game saw the Tigers and Quakers go back and forth, with Shaw getting the win in relief of starter Reece Uehara and reliever Keala Hollenkamp. Shaw threw the final two innings, allowing Penn just a hit and striking out two while Princeton rallied to take and then re-take the lead over its final two at-bats.
Penn opened the scoring with a Jade Montgomery RBI single in the first, and Alexis Youngren and Delaney Smith each helped push across a run in the second to make it 3-0.Â
Princeton got on the board with a Julia Dumais three-run homer in the third to tie it at 3-3, but Penn took the lead right back in its next at-bat with a Smith RBI single to make it 4-3.
The Quakers held the one-run lead until there were two outs in the bottom of the sixth, when Sonia Zhang picked up a Jessica Phelps leadoff single with a base hit to tie it, and then Dominguez followed with the go-ahead double to put Princeton up 5-4, just three outs from a win.
Penn struck right back in the top of the seventh, capitalizing on a leadoff error to that led to a sacrifice fly to make it 5-5, but Princeton put together another two-out rally, this time when Valenzuela doubled and then came home on a Phelps base hit to win it.Â
The teams will finish the series with a 12:30 p.m. single game on Sunday.
