EUGENE, Ore. – The Princeton University men's track & field team capped a historic 2021-22 season Friday night at Hayward Field, finishing a program-best seventh at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The Tigers captured All-America honors seven times.
The Tigers started the night in fourth place, and rose as high as second in the team score throughout the meet, finishing with 27 points, just four points behind Louisiana State University who were sixth with 31 points. Princeton's previous best finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships was 14th in 1934, and the finish was the higest by an Ivy League team since Yale University finished third in 1950.
Joining Sondre Guttormsen, Simen Guttormsen, and C.J. Licata as All-Americans were Sam Ellis, Ed Trippas, Sam Rodman, and Robbie Otal, bringing Princeton's total to seven All-Americans.
William M. Weaver Jr. '34 Fred Samara has now coached 96 All-Americans, and nine NCAA Champions following the conclusion of the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which saw Sondre Guttormsen win the pole vault.
Ellis started the night off in the 1,500 meters, finishing third with a time of 3:45.82 and earning First Team All-America honors. He started the race off in the middle of the pack and remained there for much of it, then pulled away in the later stages of the race and captured the third-place finish. The Tigers moved up to third in team score after Ellis' third-place finish.
Trippas produced an outstanding performance in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, finishing fifth and collecting First Team All-America honors in 8:20.29. He stayed at No. 2 on the Tigers' all-time list, but blasted his previous college PR of 8:30.25 set at the 2022 University of Pennsylvania Relays. He was also less than a second short of the school record of 8:19.41, set by Donn Cabral '12 at the Oxy High Performance Meet in 2012. After Trippas' fifth-place finish, the Tigers moved up to second in team score with 25 points, just one point behind the University of Tennessee with 26.
Also earning First Team All-America honors was Rodman, who finished seventh in the 800 meters and set a new school record with a time of 1:46.96. Rodman's previous school record of 1:47.25 took place at the 2022 Princeton Elite Invitational.
In the discus, Otal finished 16th and collected Second Team All-America honors. Otal's first throw was his best, going 55.92 meters. He followed with marks of 55.21 meters, and 54.21 meters.
Jeffrey Hollis, the Ivy League Champion in the event, also competed in the high jump. He finished 19th, clearing 2.10 meters. He cleared his second attempt at the height, and came up just short of clearing 2.15 meters.
