USTFCCCA RELEASE
NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its Regional Athletes and Coaches of the Year for the 2022 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field season Thursday, and William M. Weaver Jr. '34 Head Coach Fred Samara and Assistant Coach Robert Abdullah received honors.
Â
Samara was named Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year, and Abdullah the Mid-Atlantic Regional Assistant Coach of the Year. The duo received the same honors at the end of the 2022 indoor season, and led the Tigers to the No. 5 ranking in the USTFCCCA Program of the Year standings, along with program-best finishes at the NCAA Indoor Championships (tied-fifth) and the NCAA Outdoor Championships (seventh). Samara earns his sixth USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Regional Outdoor Coach of the Year honor, also winning the award in 2013, 2012, 2011, 2002, and 2001.
Â
Under the guidance of Samara and Abdullah, the Tigers earned a program-best seventh-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Sitting in second-place for much of day two, the Tigers earned seven All-America honors thanks to national champion Sondre Guttormsen (pole vault), Simen Guttormsen (pole vault), Sam Ellis (1,500), Ed Trippas (steeplechase), Sam Rodman (800), C.J. Licata (shot put), and Robbie Otal (discus).
Â
Additionally, 27 Tigers qualified for the NCAA East Regional, the most of any school in the region.
Â
Princeton also won the Outdoor Ivy League title for the fourth-straight season, scoring a Heps record 231 points. The Tigers scored 95 more points than second-place finishing Harvard University, and won 12 event championships, set four meet records, four school records, and one Ivy League record. Daniel Duncan was also honored as the Most Outstanding Track Performer after winning two individual events, along with being part of one relay championship.
