Princeton Announces 2022 Field Hockey Schedule
June 23, 2022 | Field Hockey
The Princeton field hockey team will be playing its typical schedule in the 2022 season. Typical for the Tigers, by the way, means something along the lines of brutal.
Â
Princeton will open its season with seven straight games against teams that reached the 2021 NCAA tournament. By the time the season ends, the Tigers will have played three of last year's four Final Four teams, including the defending NCAA champion Northwestern.
Â
The season will open with a trip to Chapel Hill to take on North Carolina and Louisville on Sept. 2 and 4. After returning, Princeton will play six of its next seven games at home (and all seven in New Jersey, with only a Sept. 11 trip to Rutgers, the No. 1 overall seed last year as an away game in that stretch), starting with the home opener against Syracuse on Sept. 9.
Â
The busiest, and possibly toughest, part of the season will be a five-day stretch that will see NCAA teams Delaware, Northwestern and Maryland all come to Bedford Field between Sept. 16 and 20. In addition to the defending champion Wildcats, Maryland was also a Final Four team a year ago, while Delaware won an NCAA game before falling to Rutgers.
Â
Princeton will also play non-league games against Lafayette (Sept. 25 at home), UConn (Oct. 2 away) and Monmouth (Oct. 5 away).
Â
The Ivy League season kicks off on Sept. 23 against Penn at home. Princeton is also home against Dartmouth, Harvard and Brown, with league road games at Yale, Cornell and Columbia.
Â
"As always, we're looking forward to challenging ourselves," says Tiger head coach Carla Tagliente. "This is such an important part of our program. We want to play the best teams we can and really test ourselves. We're looking forward to getting started."
Â
Princeton's 2021 season was one of several near-misses, with a shootout loss to Harvard that denied the Tigers the Ivy League championship and three other overtime losses, including ones to Louisville and Maryland. The Tigers did not have a senior on last year's team, and that roster will be bolstered by the arrival of six newcomers.
