Princeton assistant coach Courtney Kessel has been named head coach of Canada's U-18 team at an August camp that will include games against Team USA, Hockey Canada has announced.
Kessel will see many familiar faces at the camp, set for Aug. 2-14 in Calgary, with three games against the U.S. from Aug. 17-20. Canada's National Women's Team and National Women's Development team will be in Calgary as well, and between those teams, five current or alumnae Tigers will compete, including reigning Olympic gold medalists and IIHF World Champions Sarah Fillier, a rising junior, and Claire Thompson '20, along with rising senior Maggie Connors and rising sophomores Dominique Cormier and Sarah Paul.
Still more Tigers will be behind the bench, with Princeton head coach Cara Morey as a camp coach for Canada, Princeton assistant coach Shelly Picard on the U.S. bench, and Princeton equipment operations director Kaitlyn Scales keeping the Americans sharp.
Kessel won gold as an assistant coach with the Canadian U-18s at the 2019 IIHF U18 Women's Worlds, and has been an assistant with Canada's National Women's Development Team twice, in 2017 and 2019.
For the national teams, the event serves as prep for the IIHF Women's World Championship, Aug. 24-Sept. 4 in Denmark.
