Notes To Know Ahead Of Opening Weekend
- Five players who earned All-Ivy for Princeton last season are back in the lineup in 2022, led by first-team All-Ivy selection Lucas Gen. Also returning with All-Ivy accolades to their credit are second-team All-Ivy honorees Daniel Diaz Bonilla, Malik Pinto and Issa Mudashiru as well as Walker Gillespie who was named honorable mention All-Ivy.
- Princeton returns 62% of its scoring from last season, led by Daniel Diaz Bonilla and Walker Gillespie who each had four goals. All total, nine of the 14 players who netted at least one goal during the 2021 season are back in uniform for 2022.
- The goal scorers returning for 2022 also possess the clutch gene. Returning players accounted for eight of Princeton's 12 game-winning goals in 2021, led by All-Region and All-Ivy selection Daniel Diaz Bonilla who had a team-high three GWGs last season.
- Senior Lucas Gen is the captain for the 2022 season. A second-team All-Region selection last season and a first-team All-Ivy defender in 2021, Gen has played in 33 career matches with 19 starts. Last season, he played a team-high 1,469 minutes on the back line and pitched in a pair of goals. In the preseason, he was one of United Soccer Coaches' "Defenders to Watch".
- Princeton will be playing a first-time netminder no matter who is in goal this weekend. With the graduation of second-team All-Ivy keeper Jack Roberts (0.86 GAA, .759 save% in 2021) and backup Sam Morton (2-0-0 record with 1.5 shutouts in four starts last season) the duties in goal fall to sophomores Khamari Hadaway and William Watson or freshman Sully Atkin. Neither Hadaway nor Watson saw any minutes last season as freshmen.
- Junior Francis Akomeah had three shots on goal last season – each found the back of the net.
- The Tigers welcome 10 newcomers to the team this season in a recruiting class that was ranked No. 5 by TopDrawerSoccer. Three newcomers, Will Francis, Jack Hunt and Giuliano Fravolini Whitchurch played together with Albion SC in San Diego. Midfielder Jack Jasinski comes to the Tigers after playing with Philadelphia Union II I the USL since 2020.
- The Tigers are 28-22-9 all-time against Rutgers with a 10-13-4 record in Piscataway. Princeton has dropped the last two meetings between the teams by matching 1-0 scores. The last time the two teams met at Rutgers was 10/11/16 – a 4-1 win for the Tigers.
- The series with the Catamounts is a little less-played than the one with Rutgers. Just two previous games have been contested between Princeton and UVM, each side claiming a win. Last year, the 'Cats held serve on home turf, 2-0. Back in 1988, Princeton scored a 4-2 win in a game played at Rutgers.
