Princeton senior Quincy Monday, a NCAA finalist last year at 157 pounds, took part in the NWCA All-Star Classic held Tuesday at FloSports in Austin, Texas, battling Iowa State senior David Carr to a 2-1 defeat.
The bout didn't see its first point scored until Carr earned one on an escape from starting the second period on bottom. Monday tied it with an escape with 38 seconds to go in the third period, but by that time, Carr had flipped a six-second riding time disadvantage entering the third period to 1:16 in his favor, holding on to that to gain what was the decisive point of the match.
Both Monday and Carr competed at the 2022 NCAA Championships at 157 pounds and met at the All-Star Classic in a 165-pound bout.
Holding the fifth seed at the NCAA Championships last season, Monday won twice before defeating fourth-seeded Ed Scott of North Carolina State 5-3 in the quarters. Monday might have then met Carr in the semis, but top-seeded Carr lost in a tiebreak 2-1 to 17th-seeded Hunter Willits of Oregon State in the round of 16. Willits then lost to Michigan's eighth-seeded Will Lewan, whom Monday beat 3-2 in the semis. While making history in pairing with 125-pounder Patrick Glory to give Princeton two finalists at the same NCAA Championships for the first time ever, Monday saw his run end in the final against Northwestern's Ryan Deakin.
Both Monday and Carr are sons of 1988 U.S. Olympians and medal winners, with Kenny Monday a gold medalist at 74kg (163 lbs.) and Nate Carr a bronze medalist at 68kg (150 lbs.).
Monday is a two-time All-American who qualified for the NCAA Championships in each of his first three seasons. He was named an All-American in 2020 when that year's NCAAs were canceled due to the pandemic.
