Columbia Gets Past Princeton Wrestlers in Ivy Opener

Princeton had wins from Quincy Monday (165), Luke Stout (197), Travis Stefanik (285) and Patrick Glory (133) in taking our of the first seven matches. Two of Columbia's three wins in that stretch were by fall, giving the Lions a 15-13 lead at the end of those seven matches before Columbia expanded its lead by closing with three wins at 141 through 157, adding a third win by fall.
In the opener, No. 3-ranked Monday won his fifth match over a top-25 opponent in less than a month competing at 165, defeating Columbia's No. 17 Joshua Ogunsanya 4-1 after getting a first-period takedown and leading the rest of the way. Monday added a second-period escape and the riding-time point, holding Ogunsanya scoreless until a third-period escape.

Columbia's No. 33-ranked Lenox Wolak followed with a 3-1 win over Kole Mulhauser at 174 to tie the match at 3-3, getting a second-period takedown and adding a third-period escape. Mulhauser scored his point on a second-period takedown.
At 184, Columbia's Aaron Ayzerov pushed the Lions' lead to 9-3 with a second-period pin, and at 197, Princeton got four points back with No. 20-ranked Luke Stout's 11-2 major-decision win over Jack Wehmeyer. Stout had an eight-point third period and added the riding-time point in breaking his bout open, getting two takedowns and a four-point nearfall to put away a match that he led 2-0 entering the third.

Stefanik put Princeton ahead 10-9 at the halfway mark, getting a third-period takedown in a 3-1 heavyweight win that saw each wrestler get a point on an escape as the only other scoring.

Columbia's No. 32-ranked Nick Babin started the second half of the match with a first-period pin of Nick Kayal at 125 before senior Patrick Glory made his 133-pound Tiger debut, up from his usual spot at 125, rallying to defeat Columbia's No. 32-ranked Angelo Rini 7-3. Though Rini had an early takedown, by the end of the first period, Glory and Rini were tied 3-3 after Glory had a takedown of his own and added an escape while Rini picked up a penalty point. Glory had what became the decisive takedown in the second period before adding a third-period escape and the riding-time point.

Though Columbia's lead was at just two points at 15-13 with three matches to go, Columbia closed it out by sweeping all three. No. 25-ranked Matt Kazimir pinned Danny Coles in the first period at 141 before Danny Fongaro had two first-period takedowns on the way to a 5-3 win over Marshall Keller at 149 and No. 26-ranked Cesar Alvan had a first-period takedown in a 3-1 win over Ty Whalen at 157.
Princeton will host Rider Saturday at 6 p.m. in Jadwin Gym for the MAC-Ivy Rivalry trophy in a matchup of Mercer County's two Division I programs. Tickets are available here.
