Dual Season Opens For Men's Tennis Against DePaul & Wisconsin
January 21, 2023 | Men's Tennis
MADISON, Wis. – The Princeton University men's tennis team opened its dual season Saturday at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium, falling to DePaul 5-2 and Wisconsin 4-3.
"Certainly not the results we wanted to start the year, but I'm pleased with how we adjusted in the Wisconsin match after a disappointing performance against DePaul," said Head Coach Billy Pate. "We are a young team and just had some nerves in the first match. It's a challenge to play two quality teams on the road in the same day so we knew it would be difficult. Against Wisconsin we competed with an edge and played much more aggressive to put us in a position to win the match. We'll have a lot of matches like this throughout the spring and this will benefit us the next time out. I'm confident we will continue to grow and improve each week. We'll get back to work this week and look forward to the ITA kickoff next weekend at UVA."
Princeton vs. DePaul
The Tigers won the doubles point, with Sebastian Sec and Alan Kam prevailing at No. 2 over Leon Huck and Jona Gitschel, 6-3, and Ellis Short and Ben Smith overcoming Shourya Verma and Pablo Almeida, 6-1, at No. 3.
In singles, Filippos Astreinidis earned a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 victory over Sven Moser at the No. 5 position.

At the No. 5 position, Short triumphed 6-4, 6-4 over Michael Minasyan. With the score tied at 3-3 and just one point needeed to clinch the match, Will Peters battled valiantly but fell just short at No. 2 to Mihailo Popovic, 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2).
