Tigers Rally, But Brown Nets OT Winner in Baker
January 21, 2023 | Women's Ice Hockey
A flurry of third-period goals saw the Princeton women's hockey team erase two Brown leads, but an overtime winner delivered the Bears a 4-3 win Saturday afternoon in Baker Rink.
Brown took a 1-0 lead on a Cameron Sikich shot from along the boards with 3:30 to go in the first period, and until more than three minutes into the third period, it was the game's only goal. That changed in a big way, with both teams combining for five goals in a span of less than 11 minutes. Mia Coene's game-tying goal with just less than six minutes to go in the third ended that stretch, pulling Princeton even at 3-3.
Maggie Connors provided the initial tying goal for Princeton on a play that began with Stef Wallace poking the puck away from a Brown skater at the top of Princeton's defensive zone. Sarah Fillier collected the loose puck, had a 2-on-2 with Connors into the Tigers' attacking third, and after Fillier found a defender between her and Brown netminder Kaley Doyle, Fillier sent the puck back to Connors for a blast from the faceoff dot to Doyle's right.
Â
The 1-1 tie lasted less than three minutes until Brown got the first of two goals in a span of less than five minutes as the Bears took a 3-1 lead just before the midway point of the third. Jade Iginla won a faceoff and sent the puck home for an unassisted goal to put Brown back in front, and Ellie Gauvin fired a shot right through the slot from just inside the blue line to give Brown the two-goal lead.
Three-and-a-half minutes after Brown gained its 3-1 lead, Annie Kuehl pulled Princeton back within one with seven-plus minutes to go in the third, firing one from the top of the faceoff circle to Doyle's left.
Â
Just 86 seconds later, it was Kate Monihan's turn to fire from just about the same spot Kuehl did, and Coene was on the spot in the crease to tip in the rebound.
Â
The 3-3 tie persisted through the final nearly six minutes of the third period and almost three minutes of the overtime, but after Sikich poked away a Princeton pass in the Tigers' defensive zone, Madie Stockfish was there to send in a shot from the faceoff dot to Tiger netminder Jennifer Olnowich's left and win the game for Brown.
