Cornell Jumps Out Quickly, Tops Princeton
October 14, 2023 | Men's Soccer
The Cornell Big Red made themselves right at home in the Ithaca rain Saturday afternoon, scoring twice in the first 15 minutes and never allowing Princeton back into what became a 5-1 Big Red win.
The Princeton goal came after the Big Red led 5-0, when Nico Nee converted a penalty kick with 14:31 left to play.
The loss dropped Princeton to 1-2-1 in the Ivy League with three games, and nine points, still to be contested, beginning Saturday at home against Brown and followed by trips to Harvard and Penn. The top four teams in the league will advance to the first Ivy tournament, held at the No. 1 seed. Right now, the race is a complete logjam, with not too much separating the top from the bottom and the race for the four tournament spots wide open.
Cornell, who won for the first time in the league this season, needed just over five minutes to get on the board, when Balazs Feher redirected a cross into the far corner. The lead became 2-0 less than 10 minutes later, when Alex Harris cashed in a PK of his own. Despite a great defensive save from Princeton's Stephen Duncan on a corner kick, Cornell made it 3-0 when Alioune Ka scored off the next corner, after Duncan's saving header had gone across the end line.
Harris and Ka added second-half goals before Nee spoiled the Cornell shutout at least.
