PRINCETON – Kaitlyn Chen has been named to the 2024 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Preseason Watch List, Her Hoops Stats announced today.
Â
Chen was the 2023 Ivy League Player of the Year last season, posting career highs in almost every category. She led the team in scoring (16.2) while also posting 4.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. Chen improved in scoring, rebounding, assists, shooting percentage and assists while her 426 field goal attempts were fourth most all-time in program history, her 192 field goals was fifth most and her 487 points were sixth.
Â
The senior captain saved her best work for the postseason as she paced the team in scoring vs. Penn and Harvard in the Ivy League Tournament, leading her to be named Ivy Tournament Most Outstanding Player of the second straight season. Chen also snagged 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds vs. NC State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and a team-best 19 points vs. Utah in the second round.
Â
To be eligible for this award, players must compete in one of the 26 conferences deemed to be "mid-major." The following conferences are considered high-major for the purposes of this award, and thus ineligible: ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12, and SEC. In January the 15-player midseason watch list will be announced, followed by 10 semifinalists announced in February. The five finalists will be announced in early March, with the winner announced around the Final Four. The list is fluid and players may play their way on or off the list over the course of the season.
