Ivy Tournament Bound: Murphy's OT Goal Tops Yale 2-1, Extends Season
October 27, 2023 | Field Hockey
The weather suggested summer. The stakes said otherwise. Bridget Murphy made sure that the Princeton field hockey season didn't end in New Haven Friday night.
Murphy tipped in a cross from Ella Cashman 51 seconds into overtime to give Princeton a thrilling 2-1 win over Yale to clinch the fourth spot in next week's Ivy League tournament. The game was essentially a play-in game, as the winner would advance and the loser would see its season end, and the 61 minutes were more than worthy of what rested on the outcome.
As if there wasn't enough drama, the officials reviewed the game-winning goal for five minutes. When they emerged from the tunnel, they slowly made their way to midfield before finally signalling goal.
With the win, the Tigers will play at either Cornell or Harvard, depending on who wins Saturday's game between those two in Ithaca, in the Ivy semifinals Friday. Princeton will be either the second, third or fourth seed in the event, which will feature Penn as well.
The weather at the start of the game was a balmy 72 degrees, and Yale's Senior Day preceded the opening whistle. The crowd was large and vocal. The game had everything, except a goal of course, at least until six minutes into the fourth quarter. Talia Schenk, who had woken Princeton's offense up late in the third quarter, made another great individual play to get the ball in the circle and then rifle a reverse shot that smacked against the wood in the back of the cage.
Would that goal stand up? Nope. Yale tied it two minutes later, and when Princeton couldn't score on three late corners, the Tigers went to OT yet again, just as it had four other times this season. Just like in the Delaware game way back in early September, it was Murphy who would be the hero.
The game winning goal came on a penalty corner that Schenk drew. Schenk got the ball to Sykes off the insertion, and Sykes took it down the right side inside the circle. Her cross found Cashman, who fed it to Murphy, who was wide open on the backside.
Goal Tigers. Celebration Tigers. Five minute delay. Again, Goal Tigers. Again, Celebration Tigers.
The season continues.
