Coomans' First Career Goal Helps Lift Princeton to 1-0 Win at Penn
October 04, 2023 | Women's Soccer
Drew Coomans scored her first career goal in the 50th minute, helping the Princeton women's soccer team to a 1-0 win at Penn on Wednesday night.
The win delivered three points in the Ivy League standings, lifting Princeton to 2-1 in the Ivy League and 7-2-2 overall. A visit from Yale is ahead on Saturday night at 7 at Roberts Stadium for what will be the midpoint of the Ivy League season, and the halfway mark has Princeton tied for second in the league with Dartmouth and Harvard, three points back of 3-0 Brown.
Coomans, a sophomore, took a pass ahead from Aria Nagai for the finish, putting Princeton in front. The Tigers ended up outshooting Penn 16-5 overall and 5-3 on goal with keeper Tyler McCamey making all three saves.
Â
Coomans' goal was just the third allowed by Penn in seven games at home this season, and the shutout was the first time Penn was blanked at home since last season's home finale, on Oct. 30, 2022. Â
The outcome continued a string of Princeton-Penn games that have been decided by one goal or ended in a tie annually since 2013, aside from the 2020 canceled season. The win also extended Princeton's win streak against the Quakers to a sixth game, since a 2016 tie, and it extended Princeton's unbeaten streak against Penn to an eighth straight game, since a 2014 Quaker win.
Saturday's game will be the team's Pride Game, and the first 150 fans will receive a Princeton Pride scarf. Admission is free.
