"Ella-vuh" Win As Princeton Takes Down Brown 2-0
October 06, 2023 | Field Hockey
It was one Ella early and another Ella late and a big win — call it an "Ella-vuh" win — for the Princeton field hockey team Friday afternoon.
Ella Cashman started the scoring three minutes in and Ella Hampson finished it with a goal with 6:32 left to lead Princeton to a 2-0 win over Brown. The victory came 48 hours after the Tigers lost to Penn 3-2 in two overtimes and 48 hours before Princeton will host Syracuse on Senior Day.
With the win, Princeton is now 5-6 overall and 3-1 in the Ivy League as it chases a league championship and also, for the first time, a spot in the Ivy League tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Ella Cashman pounced on a loose ball in the circle and pushed it just across the goal line, something that the officials took the time to review before confirming. The game stayed that way through the rest of the first half and into the third quarter, when Brown was awarded a penalty stroke, which hit the goal post to keep it 1-0. Brown almost tied it on a corner later in the quarter, but Robyn Thompson got her pad on it just before it crossed the line.
Brown had three corners in the third quarter and took seven shots in the second half alone but could not score. Princeton, who had only one first quarter corner, took only two shots in the final three quarters after taking five in the first. Hampson, though, made the last of those count, when she reversed a drive into the cage to seal it.
WHAT THE BOX SCORE DOESN'T TELL YOU
* The shutout was Princeton's first of the season and first since another 2-0 win over Brown last season.
* Princeton has now defeated Brown 23 straight times.
* Princeton is now 5-6 overall heading into the game against Syracuse Sunday. A win would put the Tigers back to the .500 mark and make them eligible for this coming week's national rankings. It's also the fourth time this year that Princeton has been in this situation, and the Tigers are 0-3 in those first three Sunday games, with losses to Rutgers, UConn and Northwestern.
* Princeton leads the all-time series against Syracuse 13-11, after the Tigers won in the regular season last year and Syracuse won in the NCAA tournament last year.
