Princeton Falls To Syracuse On Senior Day 2-0
October 08, 2023 | Field Hockey
The Princeton field hockey team finished its third game in five days by hosting Syracuse on Senior Day Sunday afternoon. The Tigers now have all week to prepare for their next one as all of their attention now shifts to the Ivy League.
Syracuse scored once on a penalty stroke and once on a penalty corner to take down the Tigers 2-0 in Princeton's final non-league game of the year. Next up for Princeton is a game at home Saturday at noon againast Harvard as the race for the Ivy championship and the four spots in the Ivy tournament start to come into clearer focus.
As for Senior Day, Ellie Manriquez was one of six seniors honored before the game, and she almost made it an even more special occasion late in the first half. Syracuse took a 1-0 lead on a penalty stroke with 2:27 to go in the second quarter, but Manriquez, whose career has been derailed by injuries, rifled a reverse shot that almost tied it a minute later before it was knocked away at the last second.
Syracuse added another goal in the third quarter on a perfectly executed penalty corner, as Charlotte de Vries returned the ball to inserter Willemijn Boogert for a one-timer into the far corner.
Next up for Princeton is a home game Saturday at noon against Harvard, who is currently 4-0 and tied for first in the league with Penn, also 4-0. Princeton and Cornell (who hosts Penn Friday) are both 3-1.
In addition to Manriquez, who got the most extensive playing time of her career to date, Princeton also honored seniors Liz Agatucci, Sam Davidson, Gracie McGowan, Bridget Murphy and Robyn Thompson before the game.
