November 04, 2023 | Men's Water Polo
PRINCETON – The No. 7 Princeton Men's Water Polo Team clinched the No. 1 seed in the Northeast Water Polo Conference Tournament with two wins on Saturday at DeNunzio Pool.
No. 7 Princeton 22, LIU 7
The Tigers ripped off seven goals in the first quarter, earning a five-goal advantage after eight minutes. Princeton's offense kept rolling with seven more tallies in the second stanza, holding a 14-4 lead at halftime. Princeton wasn't threatened in the second half as 14 different players scored in the victory.
No. 7 Princeton 16, Iona 8
Before the game, Princeton honored the Class of 2024, Christian Hartch, Pierce Maloney, Matej Sekulic, Alex Roose, Yurian Quinones and Chris Armstrong. That group has won 94 games during its time and posted a 34-6 conference mark.
Will Swart's goal with 17 seconds left in the first quarter gave the home team a 4-1 lead in the first frame. The Tigers would go onto score eight of the first nine goals of the game and held a 9-2 lead at the break. Princeton scored four times in the third quarter and three tallies in the final eight minutes to double up the Gaels, 16-8.
Princeton will get a bye into the NWPC Tournament semifinals as the No. 1 seed. Harvard could finish tied at 9-1 overall in the conference with two wins, but goal differential between the two teams when they played each other gives head coach Dustin Litvak's group the edge.
