Gakwasi Leads Men's Basketball Past Delaware Valley, 84-53

PRINCETON, N.J. – Led by junior Darius Gakwasi's 18 points, the Princeton University men's basketball team took down Delaware Valley Friday afternoon inside Jadwin Gymnasium, 84-53.
Gakwasi led the Tigers in scoring for the second-straight contest and tied his career-high, going 7-for-12 from the field and 4-for-7 from three, with his four made three-pointers being a career-best. Sophomore Vernon Collins finished with a career-high 11 points, a career-high eight rebounds and one assist, and freshman Jacob Huggins added 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting, five rebounds and two assists. Freshman Dalen Davis rounded out the Tigers' double-digit scorers with 10 points. Sophomore Jack Scott also recorded a game and career-high 12 rebounds, a game-high four assists, four points, two steals and one block.
With help from a senior Zach Martini three-pointer followed by a pair of Pierce free throws, the Tigers took an 8-4 lead with 16:56 on the clock. While the Aggies narrowed the deficit to three, 13-10, at 12:11, a sophomore Xaivian Lee three-pointer led an 8-0 run that put Princeton ahead, 21-10, with 8:36 left to play.
Junior Blake Peters' third three-pointer of the contest, which came with 6:03 remaining in the half, ignited a 10-0 run that extended the Tigers' advantage to 20, 16-36 after a dunk by Collins with 4:08 on the clock. A pair of Huggins layups then sent Princeton in the half with a 45-21 advantage.
The momentum stayed with Princeton in the second half, as a pair of free throws by Huggins at 17:31 put the Tigers up 49-28. Princeton continued to extend its lead, with a Gakwasi three-pointer then a Scott dunk putting the Tigers in front, 62-36, with 11:51 remaining.
Back-to-back three-pointers by junior Philip Byriel and Gakwasi gave the Tigers a 77-44 advantage with 4:31 remaining, and the Tigers would go on to end the game with the 84-53 victory.
