Albuquerque, N.M. – Back-to-Back Champion!
Princeton's Sondre Guttormsen won the 2023 NCAA Men's Indoor Pole Vault National Champion after clearing 6.00 meters (19-8 1/4) at Friday's national indoor championship in the Albuquerque Convention Center.
This is Guttormsen's second consecutive time being named the men's indoor pole vault national champion, and his third NCAA title overall.
What made for a thrilling indoor championship, both Guttormsen and Zach Bradford of Texas Tech initially cleared 5.91m, smashing Guttormsen's previous PR of 5.90 m.
Once Guttormsen had officially clinched the championship title due to fewer misses than Bradford, he continued to attempt to clear 6.00m.
On only Guttormsen's second try, he cleared 6.00 m to equal the collegiate record set in 2021 by KC Lightfoot of Baylor Track & Field.
Head Coach Fred Samara commented on Guttormsen's championship performance, "Sondre is the ultimate competitor. He had tremendous focus today, needing a record vault to win."
Another pair of Tigers had admirable performances in Albuquerque.
On the track, Sam Rodman took a ninth-place finish in the Men's 800m prelim race, finishing with a time of 1:49.94. Rodman's indoor championship performance qualifies him as a Second Team All American honoree.
In the Long Jump, Greg Foster made his NCAA Championship debut, finishing 15th overall with a distance of 7.51m meters.
Foster was the only freshman to compete in the men's long jump championship in Albuquerque, and is the first Princeton Tiger NCAA Indoor Participant to compete in the men's long jump since Ugwunna Ikpeowo in 1995.
The future is bright for Foster, who earns himself Second Team All-American honors following his performance at this years' indoor championship.
