SWEETNESS!!! Princeton Drills Missouri 78-63 To Reach The Sweet 16
March 18, 2023 | Men's Basketball
The first one was heart-racing, make-sure-you're-breathing tension. The second one was sweet. And Sweet.
It was sweet, as in a pretty much wire-to-wire win with the outcome long decided by the final minute, and Sweet, as in this rather improbable, and thoroughly amazing sentence: Princeton is heading to the Sweet 16.
Princeton, two days removed from its opening round win over second-seeded Arizona and less than a week away from even getting the Ivy League's automatic NCAA bid, defeated seventh-seeded Missouri 78-65 Saturday in Sacramento. With the win, the Tigers — the ones from Princeton, that is — are headed to the Sweet 16.
How does that sound?
Up next for 15th-seeded Princeton will be the winner of Sunday's game between third-seeded Baylor and sixth-seeded Creighton, in a game that will be played in Louisville.
That sounds pretty good too.
Princeton's margin of victory was the largest ever in the tournament's history by a 15 seed.
The win over Missouri was probably Princeton's best postseason performance since the 1965 East Region final, when the Tigers defeated Providence by 40. This time, Princeton trailed only once, by one point, and led by double figures for most of the final 25 minutes.
The party started early in this one, as the large Princeton crowd didn't have to sweat this one out the way they did Thursday, when Princeton needed a late 9-0 run to top Arizona 59-55.
Princeton was led by, well, everyone. Where to start? With Ryan Langborg's 22 points, six rebounds and four assists? How about Blake Peters, with 17 points in 14 minutes while stretching his two-game NCAA three-point shooting to 8 for 13?
Tosan Evbuomwan was again the controller of the offense, and he finished with nine points, nine rebounds and five assists. Caden Pierce had nine points and, wait, is that right? He had 16 rebounds? Yes, he did.
Princeton outrebounded its second straight Power Five opponent, this time crushing Mizzou 44-30 on the glass.
It was a dominant performance. It was a clutch performance. It was an historic performance.
More than anything else, it was Sweet.
Princeton's NCAA allotment of Men's Sweet Sixteen tickets are sold out. Information will be emailed to individuals who placed orders by end of day Monday, March 20th confirming order fulfillment.
General game tickets outside of the Princeton allotment are also available via Ticketmaster, the NCAA Tournament's official ticketing partner.
