Princeton's Season Ends With Second-Round Loss To Utah
March 19, 2023 | Women's Basketball
The Princeton women's basketball team is so good on defense, it even managed to get three points taken off the board at halftime of its NCAA second-round game at Utah. Okay, maybe that's an exaggeration. It was actually the refs who took away the three, after video showed that a three-pointer by the Utes had come after the shot clock expired.
Or maybe the Tigers are just that tough on the defensive end. They certainly were their usual relentless selves against Utah, forcing turnovers, defending shots, rebounding, pressuring the ball everywhere. Unfortunately for the Tigers, they were done in at the one place you cannot defend: the foul line.
In the end, Utah defeated Princeton 63-56 Sunday evening to advance to the Sweet 16 and end the Tigers' season at 24-6, with another Ivy League championship, Ivy tournament championship and NCAA win, the program's second straight and third overall. Utah is now 27-4.
Princeton was done in at the foul line, where Utah shot 28 for 37 and Princeton shot 11 for 15. In fact, Utah's Alissa Pili, the Pac 12 Player of the Year, matched Princeton at the line, where she scored 11 of her 27 points, to go along with 10 rebounds.
Other than that, Princeton was incredible on the defensive end. Utah came in as the No. 3 scoring offense team in the country at 84.1 points per game, a figure that's even higher on its home court, the Huntsman Center, where the Utes averaged 90 and put up 103 in the opening round 26-point win over Gardner-Webb.
Against Princeton? Utah scored the 63 points while shooting 39.5 for the game and just 1 for 15 from the three-point range after shooting 38 percent from beyond the arc all year. Princeton forced 20 turnovers, with nine steals and six blocked shots.
Utah led 20-12 after the first quarter but scored just 43 the rest of the way. The Utes were ahead by 14 at one point of the first half, and it was a nine-point game going into the lockerroom at the start of the half and a six-point game coming out at the end of the half.
The second half was tight the whole way, and Princeton cut it to four several, including at 46-42 at the end of the third. Princeton had it within two at 50-48 with seven minutes to go, but that was as close as the Tigers would get.
Pili, who had 33 in the win over Gardner-Webb, battled Princeton's Ellie Mitchell all night. Mitchell, the Ivy Defensive Player of the Year the last two years, finished with nine points, 18 rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Of her 18 rebounds, 10 came on the offensive end.
Kaitlyn Chen had 19 points to lead the Tigers, who also got 16 from Grace Stone.
