Women's Lacrosse Secures 20-16 Win Over Brown
April 16, 2023 | Women's Lacrosse
No. 22 Princeton battled both the Brown Bears and the elements en route to a 20-16 win at Sherrerd Field in a game that took parts of two days to complete.
Â
Opening draw was at 12:02 on Saturday afternoon, but the final whistle wasn't blown until over 24 hours later as the two teams navigated multiple stoppages for severe lightning in the Princeton area Saturday afternoon. There was a delay of 1:38 between the second and third quarters, and after more storms entered the area midway through the third quarter late on Saturday afternoon, the game was suspended and ultimately completed on Sunday.
Â
Kate Mulham had a career-high seven points in the win, matching her career high with five goals and adding two assists. Grace Tauckus had four goals – giving her 99 career points – while McKenzie Blake (3g, 1a) and Kari Buonanno (2g, 2a) also had four-point games.
Â
Sophie Whiteway tied her career high with nine draw controls, while Samantha DeVito set a new career best with five draw controls.
Â
With the win, Princeton is now 3-1 in Ivy League play and in sole possession of second place behind Penn (4-0). The Tigers and Quakers meet on April 19 at Franklin Field in Philly in a crucial Ivy tilt with regular season championship and Ivy League Tournament hosting implications.
Â
The Tigers capitalized on Brown's physicality, scoring seven extra-player goals on eight Brown yellow cards. For the game, Princeton was 7-for-9 on free position attempts.
Â
Both teams came out on fire to start the game, trading goals back and forth while combining for 11 total goals in the opening period. The Bears had the slight better of it in the first quarter, taking a 6-5 lead after fifteen minutes of play.
Â
After Annie Burton opened the scoring for Brown 0:35 into the game, Princeton rattled off the next three. Kate Mulham scored 2:06 in to tie the game before Jami MacDonald tallied a beautiful behind-the-back goal 1:58 later to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead. Mulham would strike again 0:37 later for a 3-1 Princeton lead.
Â
Brown rallied with five of the next seven goals to close out the opening period with the goals coming from five different players.
Â
In the second quarter, Princeton settled in and maintained sustained possession throughout the period to outscore the Bears, 6-2 and take an 11-8 lead to halftime. Abigail Roberts scored 2:42 into the quarter to tie the game at 6-6. The two teams traded goals, resulting in a 7-7 game midway through the second period. From there, Princeton rattled off four goals in a row to build an 11-7 lead.
Â
Mulham had two of those, with Grace Tauckus adding one and Haven Dora netting her first career goal.
Â
It was all Princeton out of the first lightning delay, with Tauckus scoring 1:05 into the third quarter with an assist to MacDonald to kickstart a 4-0 run before the second delay. Buonanno scored 45 seconds after Tauckus and Samantha DeVito followed 1:57 later. Tauckus tacked on one more 5:08 into the third quarter before play was halted.
Â
When action resumed on Sunday afternoon, Brown was quick to regain its footing by scoring three consecutive goals to climb back within four. Annie Burton scored 0:39 after the game restarted, and Mia Mascone followed 0:47 after that. A Claire Jeschke goal with 4:18 remaining in the third quarter cut Princeton's lead to 15-11, but the Tigers would then answer with a three-goal run of its own to pull comfortably away.
Â
Kari Buonanno and Kate Mulham scored free position goals before the end of the third quarter and Jami MacDonald cashed in a McKenzie Blake pass 1:03 into the fourth to give the Tigers back a seven-goal lead.
Â
That cushion was enough to stave off one more Brown rally as the Bears scored four in a row to close to within three with 5:44 remaining. Goals from Blake and Nina Montes stymied that comeback and sent the Tigers on to a win 24 hours in the making.
