Women's Lacrosse Downed By No. 15 Penn, 15-9
April 19, 2023 | Women's Lacrosse
A third-quarter run from No. 15 Penn was too much for No. 24 Princeton to overcome as the Quakers scored a 15-9 win at Franklin Field.
Â
The Tigers trailed by one after the first quarter, and the deficit was two after 30:00 of play. Out of the halftime break, Penn went on a 6-0 run which put the hosts in front by a comfortable margin.
The Tigers are now 6-7 overall and 3-2 in the Ivy League. The Tigers have run a gauntlet this season, with six of their seven losses coming to teams ranked in the Top-25 in the IWLCA rankings.
Â
The difference in the game was a pair of long scoreless droughts for the Tigers who were held without a goal for 18:50 of game play during parts of the first and second quarters and again were held off the board for 12:38 during the second and third quarters.
Â
McKenzie Blake, Kate Mulham and Haven Dora each had two goals for Princeton. Dora added an assist for a career-high three points, while Kari Buonanno had a four-point night with four assists while adding four draw controls.
Â
Grace Tauckus scored a goal, her third-period score giving her 100 career points.
Â
The teams traded goals throughout the first quarter, neither team leading by more than two. Kate Mulham answered an early Penn goal with one of her own 2:09 to tie the game at 1-1. The Quakers would net the next two, but goals from Samantha DeVito and Sophie Whiteway brought the Tigers even at 3-3 just before the midway mark of the opening period.
Â
McKenzie Blake would again bring Princeton even, catching a Kari Buonanno pass in tight before spinning and firing to tie the game at 4-4 with 5:16 remaining in the first quarter. Paige Lipman would give the Quakers a 5-4 lead after one period with her goal with 2:38 left in the period. Penn looked to double its lead late in the opening frame, but Amelia Hughes stood tall with a point-blank save of a Miles shot with 0:18 left.
Â
The second quarter slowed in terms of scoring, the two teams combining for just three goals. The Quakers had two, Princeton not getting on the board in the period until a Haven Dora goal with 1:26 left in the half.
Â
It was all Quakers in the third quarter, Penn scored the first six goals of the second half to build a 13-5 lead before Grace Tauckus fought through traffic to end the Quaker run with 3:48 left in the third period. Haven Dora would tack on one more late in the frame, finishing a sequence started by a caused turnover while Penn was in transition. Kate Mulham would loop a long pass to Dora wide open in front of the goal, and she scored with 0:15 left in the period.
Â
McKenzie Blake would score 4:32 into the fourth quarter, and Kate Mulham added her second of the game with 2:50 to play, but the Tigers were unable to put together a run to climb back into the game.

The Tigers are in action at Dartmouth on April 22. Opening draw with the Big Green is set for 12 p.m.
