Women's Golf Team Looks to Defend Team, Individual Ivy Titles This Weekend
April 19, 2023 | Women's Golf
With both an individual and team Ivy League title to defend, the Princeton women's golf team will head north of New York City this weekend to compete in the Ivy League Championships.Â
Live scoring will be available here. The tournament will be held Friday through Sunday at Century Golf Club in Purchase, N.Y. Play will begin Friday at 9 a.m., Saturday at 11 a.m., and Sunday at 8 a.m.
Catherine Rao, Victoria Liu, Yu Kyung Kim, Caris Kim and Tiffany Kong will represent the Tigers with Grace Ni as the team's substitute in the lineup.
Princeton has won three of the last four Ivy League team titles contested, in 2017, 2018 and last year, with the 2020 and 2021 tournaments lost to the pandemic. Another title would be the fourth under head coach Erika DeSanty, matching her with the program's first coach, Eric Stein, for the most for a coach in program history. Stein's teams won in 1999, 2001, 2004 and 2005, with Stein and DeSanty as the only coaches to lead Princeton to Ivy titles. Princeton was also the last Ivy team to go back-to-back, in 2017 and 2018.
Liu won medalist honors last season in her Ivy League Championships debut, becoming Princeton's first Ivy medalist since 2017 and the seventh Tiger to win medalist honors. With three of those as multiple winners, Princeton golfers have won medalist honors 11 times in the 24 tournaments held.
Liu is the top golfer in the Ivy this season by Golfstat's rankings, standing No. 108 in the nation. Harvard, at No. 66, Princeton, at No. 69, and Yale, at No. 80, are all in the top 100 by Golfstat's rankings entering the tournament. Princeton has finished ahead of Ivy competition nine times in 10 chances at tournaments between the fall and spring seasons, with three strokes separating Harvard and Princeton at the Harvard Invitational earlier this month as the lone exception. Liu is already a three-time medalist between the fall and spring seasons, winning at the Princeton Invitational, the Columbia Classic, and the UNCW River Landing Classic, sharing Columbia Classic medalist honors with rookie Rao.
