April 27, 2023 | Baseball
PRINCETON - The Princeton Baseball Team heads on the road to take on the Yale Bulldogs this weekend in a vital Ivy League series.
The two teams will face off on Friday in a doubleheader set for 2 p.m. Game two of the doubleheader will begin a half hour after game one. Game three of the series will be Saturday at 11 a.m.
The Tigers are 19-17 this season with victories over Georgia, Duke, Richmond, Cincinnati, SC Upstate, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn, Monmouth, Columbia, Rider, Cornell and NJT.
Head coach Scott Bradley's squad is third in the Ivy League at 10-5, behind Penn (11-4) and Columbia (11-4). Harvard (9-5), Yale (8-7), Brown (5-9), Cornell (5-10) and Dartmouth are behind Princeton. The Tigers can clinch an Ivy League Tournament berth with a sweep this weekend.
Scott Bandura leads the Ivy League in hitting at .396 which sits 39th the NCAA. The junior's 1.52 hits per game is 64th in the country while his 55 hits are 12 shy of Brendan Cumming's season record set last season. Bandura leads the team in runs (35), on-base percentage (.482) and stolen bases (12). He is currently on a 28-game on-base streak while his .698 slugging percentage would be the second best mark by a Princeton player.
Princeton has three other hitters hitting over .300 in Noah Granet (.347), Eric Marasheski (.312) and Nick DiPietrantonio (.302). Marasheski paces the Tigers with 15 doubles, which is six shy of the program record, while Granet has hits in eight of his last nine contests. DiPietrantonio has hits in all but two of Princeton's games since Ivy League play.
Kyle Vinci has been one of the best power hitters in the country as his 17 home runs is 12th in the nation while his .52 home runs per game are second. His 17 four baggers are the most in a single season in program history while his 47 RBI are tied fourth.
The Tigers have hit 49 home runs as a team, breaking the mark set in 1996 while its .483 slugging percentage would also be a new record. The squad has four players with at least 20 walks highlighted by Matt Scannell's 29. With one more free pass, Scannell would become the 10th Tiger to collect 30 walks in a season.
Justin Kim paces Princeton in ERA with a 3.00 mark in 39 innings out of the bullpen. Tom Chmielewski has been the Tigers' best starter with a 3.44 ERA in nine starts. He has struck out 53 hitters in 52 1/3 frames and thrown at least six innings in five of his last six starts. Jacob Faulkner has appeared in 20 contests, four shy of the Princeton all-time mark while he's three saves short of the program record as well.
Yale is 14-19 this year with wins over Richmond, Alabama State, San Francisco, Cornell, Sacred Heart, Brown, Hartford, Dartmouth and Penn. AJ Gaich has been the Bulldog's best hitter with a .315 average and an OPS of .835. Yale has stolen 70 bases in 2023 with three players stealing over 10 bags (Gaich 17, Jimmy Chatfield 13, and Carson Swank 11). Reid Easterly has the best ERA on the team with a 2.97 ERA in 57 2/3 innings.
