Softball Tigers Score Early, Often in Win over Lehigh
April 05, 2023 | Softball
Serena Starks had a 4-for-4 day and three pitchers helped nail down a 10-4 win over Lehigh in a midweek non-league game for the Princeton softball team Wednesday afternoon at Princeton Softball Stadium at Strubing Field.
Lehigh opened the scoring with a pair of first-inning doubles, but Princeton got it back and more when Starks singled, Grace Jackson walked, Adrienne Chang had a base hit to pick up Starks, and Julia Dumais had a sacrifice fly to bring home Jackson for a 2-1 lead.
Princeton pushed the lead to 3-1 in the second when Cate Bade led off with a walk and moved a base at a time, coming home on a Lauren Sablone ground ball. The lead became 5-1 in the third when Starks and Jackson put two on for Lauren Murphy to score both with a double.
Lehigh got a run back in the fourth to make it 5-2 as a base hit, a walk and an error led to the score, but the bottom of the fourth was Princeton's most productive frame. Four hits, two walks and an error added up to four runs and a 9-2 lead as Abby Hornberger, Starks and Chang all drove in runs.
Lehigh made it 9-3 in the fifth on three walks and a sacrifice fly, and Princeton got its final run in the sixth to make it 10-3 on two hits and an unsuccessful fielder's choice with Cate Bade getting the RBI-single.Â
A single, a walk and a wild pitch helped Lehigh to its final run in Princeton's 10-4 win.
Along with Starks, Chang and Jackson each had a two-hit game with Chang driving in three runs and Murphy two among those with multi-RBI games.
Molly Chambers got the win in four innings of work, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits and two walks while Meghan Harrington and Brielle Wright closed out the win, Harrington allowing two hits and two walks, striking out three in two scoreless innings, and Wright allowing a run on a hit and two walks, striking out one in her inning of work.
Princeton will return to Ivy League play Saturday and Sunday when Columbia visits for a three-game series.
