Harvard Edges Princeton for NCAA Softball Bid in Ivy Tournament Final
May 13, 2023 | Softball
A 6-0 win in Saturday's first game forced a decisive second game between Ivy League champions Princeton and Harvard on Saturday on the final day of the Ivy League Tournament at Princeton Softball Stadium at Strubing Field, but Harvard held off Princeton 3-2 in that second game to earn the Ivy's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Ivy League Pitcher of the Year Alexis Laudenslager, Ivy League Player of the Year Serena Starks, and rookie Julia Dumais were named to the all-tournament team from Princeton.
The first game saw all six runs come in the fourth inning, starting with a leadoff triple from Grace Jackson, a base hit from Dumais to pick up Jackson and get Princeton on the board, a Sophia Marsalo single two batters later to score Dumais and make it 2-0, and after two more singles from Adrienne Chang and Lauren Sablone, pinch hitter Abby Hornberger hit a grand slam to make it 6-0.
With the six-run lead, Laudenslager left after holding Harvard scoreless for four innings, allowing just three hits and a walk, striking out three. Molly Chambers finished it off to get the save, throwing three shutout innings and allowing just two hits, striking out one.
The runs in game two were concentrated as well, with Harvard scoring all three of its runs in the second inning. Three singles to start the inning picked up two runs with Kendall Jean having the last of those to plate both, and two batters later, a Teagan Shaw sacrifice fly scored Jean to make it 3-0.Â
That turned out to be just enough for starter Riley Flynn, reliever Anna Reed and the Crimson, who saw Princeton pull to within 3-2 in a sixth inning that chased Flynn from the game. Dumais had a one-out single, Allison Ha followed with a double, and Sophia Marsalo doubled both home before Reed entered the game and preserved the lead with a strikeout and a pop-up.Â
Laudenslager entered for the bottom of the sixth as Princeton's third pitcher of the game, following Chambers and Meghan Harrington and keeping the deficit at 3-2, but Reed allowed just a base hit in the seventh as Harvard finished off the win.
Laudenslager finished her Tiger career with 179 strikeouts on the season, the 11th-most in a season in program history, and 352 career Ks, sixth-most in program history. Both numbers were the most in a Tiger season or career since 2008. Starks' senior season finished with 69 hits, tied for fifth-most in program history and the most in a Tiger season since 1996.Â
