Survive and Advance: Baseball Drops Harvard, 10-3; Will Play Penn For Ivy Tournament Championship
May 21, 2023 | Baseball
PHILADELPHIA - The Princeton Baseball Team eliminated the Harvard Crimson with a 10-3 victory at Meiklejohn Stadium to advance to Championship Monday vs. the Penn Quakers.
The Tigers will have to defeat the Quakers twice in the double-elimination tournament after Penn defeated Harvard earlier on Sunday. Princeton has not won an Ivy League Championship since 2016. Princeton will be the home team in the first game and Penn will be the home squad if necessary in the second contest.
Jake Berger started the scoring with a RBI single in the top of the first for Harvard. Gio Colasante made it 2-0 in the next frame on a run-scoring double.
In the Princeton half of the second, a Jake Bold single and Kyle Vinci walk led to Nick DiPietrantonio.
This time he went deep to right center, putting the Tigers ahead 3-2. Berger tied the game at 3-all in the top of the third.
Brendan Cumming led off the third frame with a four-bagger over the left field fence to make it a 4-3 game.
Scott Bandura added onto the Tigers' lead with his third home run of the tournament in the fifth. Cumming produced another tally as he doubled down the right field line to bring in Eric Marasheski in the seventh.
Later in the inning, Nick DiPietrantonio's two-run single and Noah Granet's two-run double came with two out as the Tigers pushed across five runs in its at-bat to make it 10-3.
Justin Kim went six innings in relief and allowed just two hits, securing his seventh win of the season. He retired six of his first seven hitters before the Crimson loaded the bases in the sixth but got a foul out. Harvard made one more push, loading the bases again in the eighth, but a pop up ended the threat.
Kim sent the Tigers to Championship Monday with two strikeouts to end the contest. His six innings was the longest outing of his season.
Cumming led the way with four hits and scored twice as did Bandura and DiPietrantonio. Bandura (120) broke the Princeton single-season total base record set by Andrew Hanson (118) in 2001.
