Mitch Henderson Throws Out First Pitch at Yankees-Orioles Game
May 24, 2023 | Men's Basketball
NEW YORK – Franklin C. Cappon-Edward C. Green '40 Head Coach Mitch Henderson threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the New York Yankees – Baltimore Orioles game Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium.
It was a full circle moment for the two-sport standout, as Henderson was drafted by the Yankees with the 24th pick of the 29th round (815th overall) in 1994 before choosing to attend Princeton where he went on to have of the greatest careers, as both a player and a coach, in program history.
Henderson led the Tigers to their first Sweet Sixteen of the modern NCAA Tournament era in 2022-23, becoming just the fourth No. 15 seed to do so. Princeton became just the 11th No. 15 seed to beat a No. 2 seed after taking down Arizona, 58-55, in the first round, and earned the largest-ever margin of victory for a No. 15 seed with a 78-63 triumph over No. 7 seed Missouri in the second round. In addition, the Tigers were the Ivy League Tournament, Ivy League regular season and London Basketball Classic champions in 2022-23.
A member of the Class of 1998 at Princeton, Henderson was a two-time All-Ivy honoree as a player. Ninth on the Tigers' all-time assists list, Henderson was well known as a key player on the Princeton teams but perhaps none more iconic than his role in the Tigers' 1996 NCAA Tournament win over UCLA.
