Vinci Breaks Ivy Record; Scannell Hits Walkoff Home Run As Baseball Splits vs. Brown
May 06, 2023 | Baseball
PRINCETON – Kyle Vinci broke the Ivy League single-season record with his 20th home run while Matt Scannell's walkoff two-run home run in game two helped secure a split of Saturday's doubleheader vs. the Brown Bears at Clarke Field.
Brown 6, Princeton 3
After the Bears opened the scoring on a RBI single by Ray Sass in the second inning, Noah Granet came through with a two-run single in the bottom of the frame to put the home team in front.
An RBI knock from DJ Dillehay tied the game in the third before a run-scoring triple by Nathan Brasher gave Brown a 3-2 advantage.
In the bottom of the fourth, Caden Shapiro ripped a home run over the right field fence, tying the Ivy contest again.
Connor Cooke gave Brown a 4-3 lead on a four-bagger in the sixth before the road team added on with an error and an RBI single by Mika Petersen.
Princeton 6, Brown 5
Brown loaded the bases with no outs to open the game, but Jackson Emus got two pop ups and a strikeout. The Bears did the same thing in their next at-bat, but a fielders' choice, strikeout and pop up ended the threat.
Jake Bold got the scoring started in the fourth on a run-scoring double down the left field line that allowed Brendan Cumming to score.
Vinci's record-breaking blast came one batter later as he lifted a towering fly ball over the left field fence. His new mark broke Gene Larkin's (Columbia) record set in 1984.
Emus finished off a tremendous start by retiring 17 of the final 18 batters he faced. He struck out seven hitters and scattered four hits in seven innings.
Brown scored five times in the eighth inning with Nathan Brasher's RBI single putting the road unit ahead.
After two strikeouts to begin the bottom of the ninth, Granet kept the Tigers alive with a single to center field. Scannell took a strike before hitting a walkoff two-run home run giving the Tigers the 6-5 victory.
Jake Bold had three hits to pace the offense for Princeton while Eric Marasheski and Cumming each had two knocks. Marasheski now sits with 100 career hits.
Princeton and Brown finish the series Sunday with first pitch set for 12 p.m.
