PRINCETON – The Men's Heavyweight Rowing Team has hired Jason Elefant '15 as an assistant coach.
Elefant spent the previous season with the Cal Bears who repeated as IRA National Champions after sweeping all four IRA events, collecting a perfect Ten Eyck score.
"It's hard to express how excited I am to return home to Princeton," said Elefant. "It's not every day you get the chance to coach at your alma mater! The Princeton boathouse has a life-changing impact on its student-athletes, and I am looking forward to assisting Greg, Matt, and the rest of the boathouse in our shared pursuit of excellence."
"I'm thrilled to welcome Jason to the Princeton Heavyweight family," said Princeton head coach Greg Hughes. "He has made an extremely positive impact on every program he has worked with. We can't wait for him to work with our current and future Tigers. We would also like to thank Emma for all her hard work and will sincerely miss her."
Prior to that, Elefant had spent the previous five seasons with Syracuse including the last four as recruiting coordinator.
Elefant was responsible for recruiting all nine members of the 2022 Varsity Eight that was fifth in the 2022 IRA Championships. The 2V8+ and 3V8+ placed eighthand 10th respectively, making it the third time in the previous five years that Syracuse has placed three crews placed in the top 10 nationally.
Elefant was elevated to the post of recruiting coordinator following the completion of a successful first year at Syracuse, in which he coached the third varsity eight to an unbeaten record in the dual season and a #10 national ranking at the IRA Championship Regatta. With the 3V's 10th place finish at the 2018 IRA, Syracuse placed three eights in the national top-10 for the first time since the regatta entered its new format in 2013.
Before joining the coaching staff at Syracuse, Elefant spent two years coaching junior rowers in Great Britain. From 2015-17, Elefant held the position of Colet Fellow at St Paul's School in London, one of the country's pre-eminent schools and rowing programs.
Elefant, a Princeton men's lightweight rower, medaled three times at the Eastern Sprints and earned a spot on the 2014 IRA All-Academic Team during his junior year.
