Madison Curry Selected by Angel City FC in the 2024 NWSL Draft
January 13, 2024 | Women's Soccer
Southern California native Madison Curry heard her name called by her local team in Friday night's NWSL Draft as Angel City FC made the three-time first-team All-Ivy League defender the ninth pick of the fourth round, 51st overall.
Curry earned United Soccer Coaches third-team All-American honors this past season in helping lead Princeton to the second round of the NCAA tournament.
"I can think of nothing more rewarding than seeing individuals set lofty goals and achieve their dreams," Princeton coach Sean Driscoll said. "From the moment I met Madi in November 2016 and our subsequent conversations during her recruiting process, it was evident that her drive and mentality was different. Even then, as a 15 year old, she had aspirations of playing professionally and competing against the best. Not for one second has she deviated from that desire. I could not be more grateful that all of her efforts have come to fruition as this opportunity is so well deserved."
Curry played in 51 games across three competitive seasons as a Tiger, starting 48 of those. While also scoring three goals and adding four assists during her collegiate career, Curry was a standout on the Tiger back line, taking part in 24 shutouts. Â
"Angel City is getting a gritty, attack-minded and fearless wide back that can impact the game both in possession or with her defensive prowess," Driscoll said. "Madi's hunger to improve, training habits and ability to embrace the most competitive environments combine to form a professional mentality that will serve her incredibly well as she moves onto the NWSL. I am so excited to see her play on the biggest stage of our sport and know she will represent Princeton and our program exceptionally well."
Once Curry makes her professional debut, she would become the fifth Tiger to play in the NWSL, alongside Tyler Lussi '17, currently of the North Carolina Courage, and NWSL alumnae Lauren Lazo '15, Jen Hoy '13 and Diana Matheson '08.
