Spring Season Opens For Men's Tennis With 7-0 Win Over NC Central
January 19, 2024 | Men's Tennis
RALEIGH, N.C. – The Princeton University men's tennis opened its season with a 7-0 victory over North Carolina Central Friday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Later in the day the Tigers would to No. 21 North Carolina State, 7-0, at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
"We had a good showing this morning against NC Central to start our dual match season," said Head Coach Billy Pate. "It was nice to get nine guys action on the same day. Against NCS State they were the better team today. We battled back well in doubles and gave ourselves a shot there but didn't build the necessary momentum in singles. On the road against really experienced and disciplined teams like NCST we must be more sound and gritty. However, we are young and having only freshmen and sophomores in the singles lineup today it was telling against their older guys. We're going to learn from this as we did last year in the initial matches of the spring. I know we'll be better each match and we're excited to see that growth and success that is coming."
The Tigers won the doubles point against the Eagles, with the duo of Paul Inchauspe and Landon Ardila overcoming Kareem Hakim Abdul and Hugo Hidalgo 6-1 at No. 1 and the team of Aleksandar Mitric and Evan Wen earning a 6-1 triumph at No. 3 over Lucas Artigas and Neiman Sneed.
In singles, Paul Inchauspe picked up a 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) win over Hidalgo at No. 1, while No. 87 Ellis Short prevailed, 6-2, 6-2, over Hakim Abdul at No. 2. At No. 3 Ardila defeated Leo Fortier, 6-0, 6-1, and at No. 4 Alan Kam knocked off Naresh Bharathy, 7-5, 6-2. At the No. 5 position, Wen dispatched Oliver Saarinen, 6-2, 6-2, and Filippos Astreinidis took down Shaka Cristelliotti, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6.
